This test analyses your total, HDL, LDL and Non-HDL cholesterol, your total glycerides and gives you percentages of total cholesterol.
View full detailsThis test checks your cholesterol levels (the different types of cholesterol that are in your blood) and lets you know your risk of developing cardiovascular problems.
If you have high levels of cholesterol, your arteries can become blocked and this can lead to coronary heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke.
Now you can know if you have high levels of cholesterol and an estimated risk of developing heart disease. This can help you to make positive choices about your diet and lifestyle, to improve your chances of a long and healthy life.
High cholesterol usually causes no signs or symptoms.
This test may be useful to you if you would life to know if you have high levels of cholesterol and an estimated risk of developing heart disease by looking at the amount of fat in your blood.
It detects the good type of cholesterol (HDL) and the bad type (LDL) and together these make up your total cholesterol level.
The only way to know how high your cholesterol levels are is to test.
This test analyses 6 essential biomarkers:
Total Cholesterol
HDL ('good' High Density Lipoproteins)
LDL ('bad' Low Density Lipoproteins)
Non-HDL Cholesterol
HDL % of total cholesterol
Total triglycerides
Yes you should fast at least 8 hours before taking your sample. We would recommend to take your test first thing in the morning before your first meal.
If you do not fast before taking this test, the reference ranges provided may not be accurate and this can mean that you receive the incorrect advice.
Rules for fasting:

- Stay hydrated by drinking only clear water (no diluted squash drinks)
- Fast for at least 8 hours before taking your sample
- Discuss with your GP if fasting could affect your medication routine
- If you feel unwell due to fasting, eat and try taking the test another day
Cholesterol is very similar to fat, but is a chemical made in your liver from the food that you eat. That is why some foods are much worse for your cholesterol levels than others.
Cholesterol is important because it helps our cells function properly and is used to produce hormones for growth, development, and reproduction. But when your cholesterol levels go outside of the normal range, you can have an increased risk of getting certain health conditions including cardiovascular disease.
Triglyceride is a type of fat stored in your body's tissue. It comes from foods like butter and oil. Triglyceride tests are used to investigate the lipid protein when estimating your risk of developing heart disease.
There are two types of cholesterol.
Good - HDL (high-density lipoprotien) is the good, because it's main function is remove the bad LDL cholesterol from your heart's arteries and blood vessels, therefore reducing your risk of heart disease. It does this by absorbing it and taking it back to your liver which then flushed is out of your body.
Bad - LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the type that causes cholesterol build-up which can eventually block your arteries. This increases your risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke.
Bad - Non-HDL is the total number of all the 'bad' types of cholesterol but simply subtracting the number of HDL ('good') from your total cholesterol number. Again, the higher the number of non-HDL, the higher the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Your ideal cholesterol levels should be:
Your "Total Cholesterol" level = 5 or below.
HDL (good) level = 1 or above.
LDL (bad) level = 3 or below.
Non-HDL level = 4 or below.
Your ideal triglyceride (fatty substance) levels should be:
Triglyceride level = 2.3 or below.
High levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease because it can lead to fatty deposits which build up in the walls of your arteries. These can gradually grow and make it increasingly difficult for blood to flow through your blood vessels, putting increased pressure on your heart.
High levels of triglycerides may contribute to arteriosclerosis, which is the hardening or thickening of the artery wall.
High cholesterol can be caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, but can also be genetic. Quite often it is possible to reduce cholesterol levels with healthier lifestyle choices, but there are simple and effective medications, such as statins, available too
Excessive amounts of cholesterol in blood can cause blockages in the artery walls, consequently leading to a heart attack or stroke.
